“We sell the juices we wanted to drink ourselves,” says owner Raphael Hubert of Dose’s cold-pressed, raw and organic concoctions.
Many juice bars serve juice made on the spot with a fast-spinning centrifugal juicer, which heats up the produce. Not at Dose. All of its juices are cold pressed using a Norwalk juicer. “It’s a great way to cover the daily recommended portions of fruits and vegetables with five raw servings in each bottle,” Hubert says. “Everybody can benefit from eating more veggies. It does wonders for your energy levels.”
Its juices are best consumed as a snack or meal supplement, and contain the nutrients of up to four pounds of organic produce.
Dose delivers everywhere on the island. The current pop-up location at 4 Place Ville-Marie (basement level) is open until the summer.
Juspur
On a business trip to the U.S. last year, owner Peter Klein discovered the burgeoning organic, cold-pressed juice culture. It inspired him to bring Juspur to Montreal, which recently opened in Outremont.
“We’re not some mom-and-pop juicing company. We have an actual chef partner who oversees the recipes and blends,” he says. The menu includes green juices, smoothies, antioxidant-packed acai bowls, salads and booster shots. A bottle of juice contains up to five pounds of greens.
Klein says Juspur’s juices can serve as a meal replacement and it offers juice-only cleanses starting at three days and lasting up to 30 days (anyone looking to go on a longer cleanse should consult a licensed naturopath, Klein says). Fresh tart juices, with apple, coconut water, cucumber, romaine, spinach, parsley, lemon and ginger sit alongside richer, dessert-like juices filled with almonds, vanilla, dates, cinnamon and cocoa powder in a typical detox plan.
Rejuice
If your jeans are starting to fit funny, Rejuice is to the rescue. “A great way to get rid of post-holiday bloating is to drink only fresh fruit and vegetable juices for three to five days,” says owner Joanna Barcessat.
Rejuice prepares six fruit and vegetable juices a day for you on a typical three- to four-day cleanse. Its “juice until dinner” cleanse offers juices for day-time consumption and a salad for the evening. It also customizes juices depending on your dietary needs. Juices have a shelf life (in the fridge) of three to four days.
Organic, cold-pressed juices are available for pick-up at select retail locations, or can be delivered to your home or office.
Nutri-Mania
If its Mean Green juice (kale, cucumber, apple, celery, ginger, lemon) is good enough for Joe Cross, known for his documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, detailing his 60-day juice cleanse to reclaim his health, it’s good enough for us.
“The challenge for most people is to get to know about juices and smoothies, to come to appreciate them, and to ultimately include them in their diet for the long haul,” says founder Jean-Pierre Kiekens.
Nutri-Mania’s juices and smoothies are designed either for detox, pre- or post-working out, immunity or all-day energy.
“For new year’s resolutions, many people want to get in better shape, take care of their health, better feed themselves or lose weight,” says Kiekens. The key to seeing the fruits of your labour? Consume juice at a set time of the day, suggests Kiekens, which will also form a habit.
“In North America, most people are eating insufficient amounts of greens, which is typically associated with number of illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, stroke and Type 2 diabetes,” he says. “Green juices and smoothies have amazing disease-prevention qualities, and are amazingly tasty too.”
Its smoothies can act as meal replacements, which juices can’t typically do. Some people replace coffee with a green juice in the morning for a caffeine-free jolt.
